What We Tested

200 tasks across four categories:

  • Autocomplete (small completions, variable names, boilerplate)
  • Function generation (write a function from a docstring or comment)
  • Refactoring (improve existing code, rename, restructure)
  • Bug fixing (explain and fix an error or failing test)

Results by Category

Autocomplete

GitHub Copilot wins here decisively. It's deeply integrated into VS Code and JetBrains with sub-100ms latency. Cursor is competitive. Claude chat is not a natural fit for sub-second completions.

Winner: GitHub Copilot

Function Generation

Cursor (backed by Claude) and direct Claude usage both outperformed Copilot on complex function generation. On tasks requiring understanding of a larger codebase context, Cursor's indexed-codebase feature gave it a significant edge.

Winner: Cursor (marginally over Claude chat)

Refactoring

Claude chat was the clear winner. Its ability to understand intent, explain the refactoring, and produce well-commented code was measurably better than inline-editor tools. Copilot's refactoring suggestions were hit-or-miss on large-scope changes.

Bug Fixing

Cursor's "Debug with AI" feature that attaches terminal output to the context gave it an edge over pure chat. Copilot's chat mode caught ~65% of bugs; Cursor ~78%; Claude chat (with manual error pasting) ~81%.
